Welcome to Swan Valley Guidance Counseling Program. We appreciate the opportunity to provide you with a guidance and counseling program to benefit your success and educational experience. The Swan Valley Guidance and Counseling Department will work to promote the academic, personal, social, and physical development of each student by providing opportunities that contribute to the growth of the individual. The Guidance and Counseling Program is comprehensive and is designed to meet the developmental needs of all students.Its purpose is to contribute to the overall success of student learning. Our Program adheres to both the National Standards for School Counseling Programs and the Michigan Comprehensive Guidance and Counseling program. The standards are based on providing success through activities designed to ensure students’academic, career, and personal/social development. The Program is delivered through individual counseling, small group counseling, large group guidance, consultation, and coordination.

Counselor

Mrs. Christine Luplow, Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education, Master of Arts in School Guidance.

Mrs. Luplow joined the Swan Valley Schools in the fall of 2000. She has teaching experience as a head start teacher for the Saginaw Child Development Center, as the Adult Skill Coordinator for the Gratiot/Isabella Regional Education Service District in Ithaca, as a general education instructor with the Michigan Department of Corrections in Carson City and as a fifth-grade teacher at Havens Elementary. Mrs. Luplow was graduated from Central Michigan University in 1991 with a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education. She earned a Masters of Arts in school guidance in 1997 from central Michigan university. She has served as a school counselor for both the Merrill and Shepherd school districts. Counselor Assignments and Appointments

To see the counselor, it is best to sign up for an appointment in advance. There are times, such as before or after school or during lunch, when the counselor is available on a walk-in basis. Check in the counseling center for appointment information and the counselor’s calendar. Parents are encouraged to call for an appointment. students who request to see the counselor during a class period should ask their teacher to call the counseling office to check availability.

Instructions for applying for the Swan Valley High School 2017 Local Scholarships

  • Read through each scholarship description and decide which ones you would like to apply for. Click on each scholarship title to get a complete description and criteria for each scholarship.
  • Once you have decided which scholarships you would like to apply for, print out the full description and criteria page of each one that you are applying for.
  • Click on the application link and download the application to your computer. It will give you the option to Open or Save. DO NOT OPEN THE DOCUMENT; MAKE SURE TO SAVE IT TO YOUR COMPUTER!!! AFTER YOU HAVE SAVED THE DOCUMENT YOU MAY THEN COMPLETE IT AND EDIT IT FROM YOUR OWN COMPUTER.
  • Complete the application on the computer and save it.
  • Print the number of applications you will be submitting.  (For example, if you are applying for and meet the criteria for  three scholarships, you will print three completed application forms)
  • Once you have completed and printed your copies of the application, attach the scholarship description page to the top of the application. STAPLE EVERYTHING TOGETHER!  DO NOT USE PAPER CLIPS! Do this for each separate scholarship that you are applying for.
  • REMEMBER TO STAPLE ALL REQUIRED MATERIALS.  YOU WILL WANT TO INCLUDE THE COVER SHEET, APPLICATION, UNOFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT, ESSAYS (IF NECESSARY) AND LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION.

BBR Family Business Scholarship

BBR will award Academic Scholarship to students in the County of Saginaw who are planning to attend college in the fall of 2017

$500 for a male student and $500 for a female student

Charitable Foundation Scholarship

Criteria:

  1. Submission of a completed and signed applicaiton
  2. Minimum 2.0 GPA, preference will be given to students who are actively involved in their school/community and whose GPA is 2.0 to 3.5, however ALL applicants will be considered
  3. Graduate of Bay, Midland or Saginaw County high school
  4. Accepted at a college, university or vocational school
  5. Full-time enrollment (12+ credit hours)
  6. Submission of an essay descrbing why you should be selected for this scholarship (limit to 1 page)
  7. Submission of High School Transcripts (does NOT need to be certified transcript)

Aspiring Nurse Scholarship

Swan Valley Pay It Forward

$250 one year to be awarded to a student that has participated for one whole year. Minimum GPA 2.5, must have a good citizenship record. One letter of recommendation, describe how you will pay it forward in the future. Include resume and financial need is not necessary.
